Italy Trips - Rome sightseeing tours & shore excursions from cruise ships. Also Amalfi, Naples, etc
- Amalfi Coast and Pompeii -
South of Naples lies one of the most famous stretches of the Italian coastline: the Amalfi Coast (a UNESCO World Heritage Site). Its lovely towns, such as Amalfi, Positano, Ravello and Sorrento, are perched on top of cliffs dropping down to the sea and the whole area is known for its unmatched natural beauty and charming local dwellings. For enthusiasts of history and archaeology Pompeii (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) is a familiar name because of the tragic end of the city. Evidence of those dramatic events is still clearly visible today: people were overcome by sudden death and smothered by volcano ashes, which has made it possible to reproduce casts of their bodies in plaster. For the same reason, a number of buildings have been preserved surprisingly well and testify to the high degree of civilization a ...

- Amalfi Coast -
Probably the best known stretch of the Italian coastline lies just south of Naples. It owes its name, the Amalfi Coast (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), to a port in the area. Amalfi was one of the four Maritime Republics which thrived in Italy during the Middle Ages. In its heyday it rivaled Venice, Genoa and Pisa. Traces of this great past are still to be seen in some of its buildings and especially in the Cathedral of St. Andrea. Tourists are also captivated by the beauty of the coastline which is highlighted by many pretty houses dotting the hillsides facing the sea. Positano, Ravello and Sorrento (ever heard the song Come back to Sorrento?) are names which ring familiar to people throughout the world. The feast for the eyes is also matched by the gourmets' delight when visitors are given an opportunity to taste a sample of Neap ...

- Naples -
Did you know that Naples was a capital city? Well, Naples was the capital of the so-called Kingdom of the Two Sicilies until 1860 when it was annexed to the Kingdom of Italy. This explains why the city has developed into a major business and industrial centre. But, as is the case with most Italian cities, the origins of Naples are lost in the distant past. While the name of the city clearly reflects the influence exerted by early Greek settlers (Nea Polis in ancient Greek meant New City), the city began to expand with the growth of trade under the Romans and this trend continued into the Middle Ages and later. Most people generally associate this city with lovely songs and cheerful inhabitants. But, in our opinion, Naples (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) is well worth a visit also because of its beautiful setting and fine historical ...

- Pompeii and Mt. Vesuvius -
These two names are inextricably linked together in everybody's mind anywhere around the world because of the tragedy that took place in 79 AD. One night, all of a sudden, Mt. Vesuvius erupted, throwing millions of tons of lapilli, molten lava, ashes and gasses on to the town and its inhabitants who were instantly killed. What usually strikes visitors to the site is the fact that, while Pompeii (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) is a dead city, the feeling of life is actually crystallized in its remains and in the plaster casts of its citizens. A short distance away lies Mt. Vesuvius, the volcano that caused the disaster and is still active today. A visit up its slopes will no doubt prove a thrilling experience that, you may be assured, will take place in absolutely safe conditions.

- Pompeii and Herculaneum -
No doubt you are familiar with the history of Pompeii (a UNESCO World Heritage Site). Its tragic end in 79AD has been the subject of books, movies and discussions ever since then because obviously it struck people's imagination for its dramatic suddenness and extreme cruelty. We believe, however, that a close-up view of the ruins of Pompeii and the plaster casts of its inhabitants will leave a lasting memory in your minds, particularly as you will feel almost as if you were taking part in what happened long ago. Herculaneum (in Italian Ercolano, a UNESCO World Heritage Site), another town not far from Naples, suffered a similar fate when it was smothered by mud caused by the eruption of the Vesuvius that hit Pompeii. While the visual impression is less striking here, you will certainly appreciate the neat layout o ...
