Catacombs have always been somewhat mysterious in the minds of many. The movie industry and literature have helped create the impression that these were actually hiding places where Christians would go to escape persecutions by Roman Emperors. In actual fact, catacombs were simply underground burial grounds that Christians began to use from the 2nd century A.D. Occasionally, masses were celebrated there during the persecutions, but no one ever lived in there. With the spread of Christianity, masses and other religious services were held out in the open and, when the mortal remains of saints or martyrs were transferred to ordinary churches, catacombs became unimportant and were gradually forgotten. Starting from the 17th century, efforts have been made to identify the location of catacombs and to unearth them. As a result, all major Catacombs have been brought back to light. This tour will enable you to visit some of the most important catacombs in Rome. Your English-speaking guide will outline the history of the catacombs and explain the meaning and significance of certain symbols and inscriptions on their walls. This will no doubt be a fairly unusual tour, but we believe it will prove a thrilling and unforgettable experience something that only Rome, the heart of Christianity, could offer you.
Roadbook for shore excursion
An English-speaking driver-guide will be waiting for you at your ship's gangway to take you for a guided visit to Christian Catacombs in Rome. You will begin from the Catacombs of St. Callixtus, on the Appian Way. They are the biggest in Rome, with tunnels totalling nearly 20 km and containing close to half a million tombs, including those of 16 Pontiffs. The Catacombs of Domitilla are located not far away: they too stretch for over 15 km., but you need not worry. Considering the size of these two Catacombs, you will only be shown a small portion of both, but what you will see is sure to leave a lasting impression on your mind. Then you will go to the Catacombs of Priscilla formerly also known as the Queen of the Catacombs because it houses the tombs of seven Popes and many martyrs and finally to the Catacombs of St. Agnes, who was killed during the persecutions of the 3rd or 4th century A.D.
Note: full-day shore excursions (FDSE) will normally last 9 hours, inclusive of travelling time to and from your ship.

Payments
Full payment for the services contracted is due 45 days prior to commencement of the tour. Reservations made less than 45 days from the commencement of the tour are subject to an additional fee of Euro 30,00 per person, unless specific arrangements are made with our Company's management and confirmed by an e-mail.
Mode of Payment
Payment can be made by Wire Transfer to our bank or by credit card. We accept American Express, Master and Visa Credit cards. In case of payment by credit card you are required to print, fill out, sign and fax back one of the 2 formats shown below. In case of late payment or payment of additional services required and agreed with the Company, the payment can be made in cash, travelers cheques or by credit cards.
