Siena and Florence (FDSE)

Go back
- Siena and Florence -

Siena (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) is a city known throughout the world for the famous Palio. This is a horse race that takes place twice a year and is marked by colourful costumes, great popular enthusiasm and keen competition among the participants. However, apart from the Palio, Siena has a lot to offer  tourists, who immediately fall in love with the city because of its beauty and  friendly atmosphere. As a mere indication of its extremely refined architecture, one might mention the Palazzo Pubblico and Torre del Mangia (overlooking Piazza del Campo, where the Palio is held), the Duomo, the Baptistery, the Palazzo Arcivescovile, Palazzo del Governo and Palazzo del Magnifico. A walk through the streets of Siena will reveal the true character of  its inhabitants famous for their ready quips, as much as for being outgoing and helpful to anyone in need of assistance. Do we need to introduce Florence to anyone? Seriously, to say that Florence is a UNESCO World Heritage Site is in our opinion superfluous. A city whose name is a synonym for history, art, beauty and elegance is hard to describe in a few lines. Piazza della Signoria, with Palazzo della Signoria, Loggia della Signoria and Palazzo degli Uffizi (housing one of the best museums in the world) is located in the very heart of the city, as are Santa Maria del Fiore, the Cathedral, Ponte Vecchio with goldsmith shops built on top of it and Galleria dell'Accademia (boasting a  unique collection of masterpieces of Italian art, such as Michelangelo's David). For the benefit of our friends coming from abroad, it may perhaps be worth adding that the complex and fascinating history of Florence is reflected not only in the extremely sophisticated nature of the city, but also in the polished manners of its people, who are always happy to welcome all visitors to their city.
