Bridges of Rome (HDSE)

Go back
- Bridges of Rome -

When you think of Rome you cannot help associating it with the river running through it: the Tiber. But a river inside a city also means bridges and the ancient Romans were known for their feats of engineering. Bridges were one of their specialties, as you will discover from a visit to some of the most historically significant bridges existing in Rome. No doubt the best-known bridge  is Ponte Milvio that was built in 207 BC and is the oldest stone bridge in the city. In antiquity its fame derived from the fact that Emperor Constantine in a hard-fought battle engaged near this bridge in 312 AD defeated his rival Maxentius and, in fulfillment of an earlier vow, adopted the cross as his symbol and put an end to persecutions against Christians. Equally significant are Ponte Sant'Angelo (called Pons Aelius when it was built in 136 AD under Emperor Hadrian), Ponte Sisto, erected by Pope Sixtus I in 1471, and the two bridges Ponte Fabricio and Ponte Cestio (both dating back to the 1st century BC), connecting the Tiber Island with the rest of the City. Ponte Rotto (or "Broken Bridge") owes its name to its checkered history of collapses and restorations until it was left as it stands now (broken down!). Is it not fantastic to think that these bridges were in fact the proud ancestors of the Brooklyn Bridge or the Golden Gate Bridge?

Roadbook for shore excursion

An English-speaking driver-guide will be waiting for you at your ship's gangway to take you for a sightseeing tour of most of the ancient bridges still existing in Rome. Some, like Ponte Milvio, were built before  the birth of Christ and, though renovated through the centuries, still stand and are currently in use. Season and weather permitting, we may also arrange, at your request, a boat trip on the Tiber to best appreciate the structure of some of the bridges.

Note: half-day shore excursions (HDSE) include also transport to and from your ship. However we recommend you take two such tours daily so that travelling time to and from your ship may be spread between the two tours without affecting the quality of either tour. If you take 2 half-day shore excursions (HDSE), the number of hours and total price will be the same as for a full-day shore excursion (FDSE).
