Jewish Rome (FDSE)

Go back
- Jewish Rome -

Did you know that Rome, which was the capital of the Roman Empire and is the seat of Papacy, is also home to the oldest Jewish community in Europe? It is a fact that a number of Jews lived in Rome as early as the 2nd Century B.C. Visiting Jewish Rome will help  to picture the history of this long-standing community and its strong, if often tumultuous, relationship with the Roman emperors and, later, with Christianity. The Ghetto of Rome stands over the initial nucleus of what was to be the City of Rome - something that is largely ignored even in Italy. The Portico di Ottavia, for example, dates back to the time of Ancient Rome. The Ghetto is of course a must for anyone wishing to see how the present-day Jewish community has managed to retain some of its ancient traditions, while adjusting to modern living. Its short, narrow streets still offer an excellent example of a close-knit community, full of warmth and intimacy. A visit to this area will also provide an excellent  opportunity to savour some typical local delicacies.
A short distance away is the Roman Forum, including the Arch of Titus (this was the Roman emperor who conquered Jerusalem and destroyed its Jewish temple). A tour of Jewish Rome should also include a visit to Rome's Jewish Catacombs on the Appian Way, one of the famous Consular Roads connecting Rome with its Empire.
For those visitors who can spare the time we would certainly recommend a short trip to Ostia Antica (the old port of Rome) where the remains of an ancient Synagogue were discovered in the early 1960s.

Roadbook for shore excursion

An English-speaking driver-guide will be waiting  at your ship's gangway to take you for a visit to the Roman Ghetto. You will have a walking tour of the entire area and visit the Synagogue located on the Lungotevere running along the Tiber. At your request the morning part of the tour  will be followed by a lunch at a typical restaurant where the menu will be in accordance with the traditional cuisine of  Rome's Jewish Community.
In the afternoon you will have an opportunity to visit the Roman Forum with remains of great public buildings, including the Arch of Titus. You will then be driven to the Appian Way to visit Rome's Jewish Catacombs.
The extended version of the tour will include also a visit to the remains of an ancient Synagogue located at Ostia Antica.

Note: full-day shore excursions (FDSE) will normally last 9 hours, inclusive of travelling time to and from your ship. The extended version of this tour would require an additional hour.
