Ancient Rome (HDSE)

Go back
- Ancient Rome -

This City is well over 2,000 years old and used to rule over an Empire almost as large as the U.S. The Forum is the market area where the Romans used to go not only to do their ordinary shopping, but also to discuss business and politics. Ample remains of several temples and buildings are still visible today; among them, the famed Arch of Constantine. Close by stands what is undoubtedly the best known of all Roman antiquities, the Colosseum. The mere name of this architectural marvel conjures up images of fierce combats among gladiators and between gladiators and wild animals (scenes from the movie "The Gladiator" were supposed to be set in this very place), as well as the slaying of Christians mauled by wild beasts. Circus Maximus, the arena used for chariot races (remember Ben Hur?), Piazza Navona, originally a stadium built by Emperor Domitian in the first century AD, transformed into what is now perhaps the most beautiful square in Rome by Pope Innocent X in the 17th century, and the Pantheon, a temple originally dedicated to the gods and, more recently, the burial place of the kings of Italy, provide other evidence of the greatness of this city and the life and customs of its citizens at the height of its power. The famous Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain and Bocca della Verita' (Gregory Peck pretended he lost his hand in there in the movie "Roman Holidays") complete this charming tour.

Roadbook for shore excursion

An English-speaking driver-guide will be waiting  at your ship's gangway to take you for a sightseeing tour of the city. You will be able to admire the Forum with its arches and other significant remains of ancient Rome and to visit the splendid structure of the Colosseum as well as the Circus Maximus. The magic spell of the Pantheon, Piazza Navona, Bocca della Verita', the Spanish Steps and Trevi Fountain will seduce your imagination and you too will want to  throw a coin in the Fountain.

Note: half-day shore excursions (HDSE) include also transport to and from your ship. However we recommend you take two such tours daily so that travelling time to and from your ship may be spread between the two tours without affecting the quality of either tour. If you take 2 half-day shore excursions (HDSE), the number of hours and total price will be the same as for a full-day shore excursion (FDSE).

Kindly note also that, in order to ensure that you bypass tiring and time-consuming lines and the tour takes place as described above and within the ordinary time limits, it would be essential for you to obtain admission tickets to the Colosseum in advance. We shall of course gladly make arrangements on your behalf to this effect.
