Rome the Eternal City (FDT)

- Rome the Eternal City Tour -

Rome is known as the Eternal City. This tour will reveal to you the marvels of this city that is unmatched anywhere in the world. Its history is reflected in the many monuments and buildings that still stand today after thousands of years! A good start of any tour of Rome is the Roman Forum, the market place that in ancient Rome used to be the centre of the political, economic and social life of he city. Picture yourself walking through ruins of buildings that were once the heart of Roman Power. You can even take photos next to pillars, arches and stairs that were named after gods, goddesses and emperors! Almost next to the Forum is the Colosseum, the very symbol of Rome. Its name immediately evokes images of fierce gladiatorial fights, wild beasts unleashed against Christians and even mock sea battles reenacted amid the cheers of frenzied crowds. Via dei Fori Imperiali - you will notice along the way four huge marble tables on a side wall describing the expansion of the Roman Empire (just in case you dont spot them immediately, look for a crowd of tourists taking pictures of a wall!) - leads from the Colosseum to Piazza Venezia, dominated by the awe-inspiring Monument  to the Unknown Soldier (nicknamed by Romans the Typewriter because of its shape). Capitol Hill is directly behind the Typewriter and is a must for anyone who wishes to have a panoramic view of the surrounding area. Circus Maximus was the arena where chariot races were held (remember Ben Hur?), while these days you are likely to strike flower children relaxing on the grass. Bocca della Verita', or Mouth of the Truth, is the perfect background for a classic photo of yourself in Rome. The Pantheon was originally a temple, later turned into a Christian church and finally into the burial place of famous Italians and of Italian royalty. If you look at it from the top of the Janiculum Hill, the Pantheon actually looks like a modern indoor sports palace, while it is one of the oldest buildings in Rome. Piazza Navona, or Navona Square, is one of Romes most beautiful squares and its the place where you can have your portrait sketched in only a few minutes. Try and see if you recognize yourself! Apart from ancient Roman times, the city has also had since then various periods of splendour and these too have left their mark on its panorama. The Spanish Steps, for instance, is an 18th century construction that is celebrated for its elegance and artistic value. Not too far away, Trevi Fountain has been for ages a favourite haunt of tourists who are always anxious to comply with tradition by throwing a coin in the Fountain as a wish for their return to Rome. Piazza Farnese is the location of the famous Palazzo Farnese, a Renaissance palace that was the result of the work of several well-known architects, including Michelangelo. Only a few steps away is Campo de Fiori, a square that is popular with young and old, Romans and visitors, who wish to spend their nights out, drinking and having fun in ancient surroundings. But then Rome is also a modern city, renowned for its exclusive shops and stores. The best  shopping area lies between Piazza di Spagna (Spanish Steps) and Via del Corso. A host of familiar high-class names and brands line the streets, ready to offer all the best available in the field of fashion.
