Taormina (FDT)

- Taormina -
This is probably the best known of all Sicilian towns because of its unique beauty, the splendid panorama visible from there and the mild climate enjoyable all the year through. The town has been a favourite holiday resort for North European celebrities: from authors such as Truman Capote, D.H.Lawrence and Oscar Wilde to actresses like, for instance, Ava Gardner, Romy Schneider, Liz Taylor and Greta Garbo. Royalty have also been guests of this town: King Edward VII travelled there several times, while other members of the British Royal Family stayed even for prolonged periods. Kings and Queens from The Netherlands, Sweden and Denmark, charmed by Taormina and its people, frequently spent their vacations there. The town overlooks the sea and our visitors may admire a splendid view of the surroundings and the sea from Piazza San Domenico, right at the entrance of the historic centre. The wonderful Greek-Roman Theatre, which is well over 2000 years old and is still used nowadays for summertime performances, matches in charm the typical narrow little streets lined with small handicraft shops, characteristic restaurants listing fish-based menus and elegant bars where time seems to have stopped to the 1930s and 1940s in the style of their decorations and furnishings as well as in the fashionable clothes worn by their customers. Just opposite the coastline lies the island of Isolabella, which is considered a naturalistic jewel and has been the destination of tourists ever since antiquity. We think, however, that our visitors deserve a special addition to what is offered by most sightseeing tours: Castelmola, a small nearby mountain village, has been selected by us to enable our friends to enjoy the best panoramic view of the whole area, including Taormina, Isolabella and of course Mt. Etna, the famous volcano.
