Siracusa (FDT)

- Siracusa -
Originally a Greek colony founded in the 8th century B.C., Siracusa was famous in antiquity when it rivaled Rome and Carthage as a sea power. The old Greek section of the City (known as Neapolis) is rich in remains of the buildings erected by Greek settlers before Rome took control of all Sicily. The Greek Theatre, originally the centre of the cultural and political life of the city, nowadays provides a wonderful setting for classical performances organized every year by the Institute for Ancient Drama (INDA). The Roman Amphitheatre is the third largest such structure in Italy, after Rome's Colosseum and Verona's Arena. The Castle of Eurialus, which was part of the walls that used to protect the city, was never taken by storm and is still standing defiantly today. Perhaps the most picturesque and yet traditional portion of the city is the island of Ortigia, that is linked to the rest of Siracusa by two bridges. Visitors are often surprised to learn that the Cathedral was a Greek Temple, which centuries later was transformed into a Christian Church (one of the earliest Christian communities grew in this city). Siracusa has always been a favourite destination of outstanding personalities, such as Admiral Horace Nelson, poet and dramatist Oscar Wilde and psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud, who were attracted not only by the magnificent works of art and ancient buildings to be found there, but also by the splendid views of the city and its surroundings. Incidentally, close to Siracusa is located the village of Cassibile, where Italy surrendered to the Allies during World War II. Many Allied soldiers in fact are buried in the Syracuse War Cemetery.
