Palermo (FDT)

- Palermo -

The main city in Sicily and seat of the Regional Parliament, Palermo was founded by the Phoenicians in the 8th century BC and subsequently grew in size and importance under the Romans, the Arabs, the Normans, the Swabians, the Angevins, the Aragonese and the Spaniards. Naturally Palermo's architecture reflects the various styles introduced by these invaders: from the Arab to the Norman and the Gothic, from the Renaissance to the Baroque and the Neo-Classical. The Cathedral is very much a case in point: a side door and the bell towers are in Catalan Gothic style, the apse is decorated in Arab and Norman style, the dome is Baroque and the front is in 15th century style. Santa Cita, a lovely little church  located close to the Conservatorio  (Academy of Music), deserves particular mention because it is the only church in the world to have its internal Baroque decorations made entirely in white plaster. The historical centre of Palermo holds many architectural treasures in store for visitors: the Teatro Politeama is widely known because of the particular shape of its dome, the quality of its acoustics and its concerts feauturing international guest stars. Politeama is the official performing centre of Palermo's Conservatorio, a highlight in the city's cultural life in view of the importance attached to music by all Sicilians. We believe, however, that a brief walk through the city streets, as well as a visit to one of Palermo's main markets, VucciriaBallaro' or the Fish Market, will prove particularly interesting. The colour and folklore are typical of this island and provide an immediate, first-hand impression of the character of its inhabitants.

Roadbook

An English-speaking driver-guide will pick you up at your hotel to take you for a sightseeing tour of Palermo. Given the extensive nature of the tour, at your request we will arrange for you to stop half way through the day and have lunch at a typical local restaurant where you will be able to enjoy a menu of Sicilian specialties. Also, later in the afternoon, you will have an opportunity to taste a local delicacy (panelle).

Note: full-day tours (FDT) will normally last 8 hours, inclusive of travelling time to and from your hotel.
