Florence (FDT)

- Florence -
A tour of Florence (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) is a tour in the past brought back to us for the occasion. This is perhaps the only definition of the city that by its very nature defies all ordinary descriptions. Its Medieval and, above all, Renaissance appearance may lead anyone to think that they are walking into history. The style of the buildings and layout of the streets are so characteristic that they make the city absolutely unique. It is easy to imagine the sophisticated Renaissance splendor of the Court of the Medicis that attracted the most famous artists of the time, while the world of business thrived, bringing prosperity and fame to Florence that came to be regarded as the political, economic and cultural hub of Europe. Names such as Piazza della Signoria, Palazzo della Signoria, Santa Maria del Fiore, Palazzo degli Uffizi, Galleria dell'Accademia, Ponte Vecchio and Palazzo Pitti are so familiar that they need no comment. But Florence has also been a centre of vital importance for the Italian language since antiquity. Current standard Italian represents the Florentine form of the language evolved from Latin. Dante Alighieri, author of the Divine Comedy, himself a native of Florence, was instrumental in spreading, through his work, the Florentine brand of the Italian language to the rest of the country. Our visitors will certainly find it interesting and stimulating to walk through whole sections of the city where they will be able to admire not only the buildings themselves, but also the daily activities of the people living there. And, no doubt, the walk, the smell of nice food and the tinkle of cutlery coming from the trattorie along the way will stir everybody's appetite. A stop at a trattoria or restaurant is therefore appropriate to taste some Tuscan delicacies and to enjoy a good drink from the vast array of excellent local wines.
Roadbook
The city centre of Florence being closed to traffic, we will arrange for an English-speaking driver-guide to pick you up at your hotel, in the event that this is located at a distance from the area. If not, we shall proceed directly with the walking tour. The tour guide will take you, after a brief call at a typical local market, to Piazza della Signoria, Palazzo degli Uffizi, Galleria dell'Accademia and other significant buildings in the city. A brief visit to the oldest apothecary shop in Florence, a step away from the Church of Santa Maria Novella, will end the tour.
To enable you to experience a day in a truly Florentine atmosphere, at your request we will arrange for you to have lunch at one of Florence's best and most typical restaurants, where you will be able to relish world-famous dishes of Tuscan cuisine.
Note: full-day tours (FDT) will normally last 8 hours, inclusive of travelling time to and from your hotel.
Kindly note also that, in order to ensure that you bypass tiring and time-consuming lines and the tour takes place as described above and within the ordinary time limits, it would be essential for you to obtain admission tickets to the Galleria dell'Accademia and the Uffizi in advance. We shall of course gladly make arrangements on your behalf to this effect.
